VulnerabilityCVE-2026-53781cvecve-2026-53781
Published: Thu Jun 11 2026 (06/11/2026, 19:11:49 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: steipete
Product: summarize

Description

The summarize tool by steipete before version 0.17.0 has a resource exhaustion vulnerability. Remote attackers can cause disk exhaustion by serving media responses that bypass size limits due to missing or misreported Content-Length headers, chunked transfer encoding, or failed HEAD requests. This allows attackers controlling a podcast feed or media URL to stream unbounded data to local storage via the temporary file download path, potentially exhausting disk or system resources on the host running the CLI.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-53781 describes a resource exhaustion vulnerability in steipete's summarize product prior to version 0.17.0. The vulnerability arises because the software does not enforce limits or throttling on resource allocation when handling media responses. Attackers can exploit this by providing media responses that circumvent size restrictions through missing or incorrect Content-Length headers, chunked transfer encoding, or failed HEAD requests. This enables streaming of unbounded data to the local temporary file storage, leading to disk or system resource exhaustion on the host running the CLI.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to exhaustion of disk space or system resources on the host machine running the summarize CLI. This may cause denial of service conditions or operational disruptions due to lack of available storage or system instability. There is no indication of data corruption or privilege escalation from the provided information.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should be cautious when processing untrusted podcast feeds or media URLs. Implementing external controls such as limiting disk usage or monitoring temporary file growth may help mitigate impact. No official fix or temporary workaround is currently documented.
