Vendor/Project: h44z
Product: wg-portal

Description

CVE-2026-54551 is an improper authorization vulnerability in wg-portal versions 2.2.0 up to but not including 2.3.0. It allows authenticated low-privilege users to access WebSocket statistics that expose peer public keys and traffic data belonging to other users. Administrative interface statistics and names are also exposed via this WebSocket. Sensitive data such as tunnel content, AllowedIPs, and user identities remain protected. The issue is fixed in version 2.3.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in the authenticated GET /api/v0/ws statistics WebSocket handler in wg-portal (WireGuard Portal) versions >=2.2.0 <2.3.0. The handler subscribes to TopicPeerStatsUpdated and TopicInterfaceStatsUpdated and forwards TrafficDelta events without enforcing per-user authorization. This allows a low-privilege user to enumerate peer public keys and monitor traffic statistics (BytesReceived and BytesTransmitted) for peers owned by other users. Additionally, interface statistics and interface names, normally restricted to administrators via the REST API, are exposed through the same connection. However, more sensitive data such as tunnel content, AllowedIPs, and user identities remain properly authorization-gated. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-285 (Improper Authorization) and has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 4.3 (medium severity). The issue was fixed in version 2.3.0.

Potential Impact

An authenticated low-privilege user can access and monitor network traffic statistics and peer public keys of other users, potentially leading to information disclosure about network usage and peer identities. Administrative interface statistics and names are also exposed, which could aid in reconnaissance. However, critical sensitive data such as tunnel content and user identities remain protected. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade wg-portal to version 2.3.0 or later, where this improper authorization issue has been fixed. No other mitigation is required as the vulnerability is resolved in the official fix.
