Vendor/Project: netbox-community
Product: devicetype-library

Description

CVE-2026-54918 is a medium severity vulnerability in the netbox-community devicetype-library. It involves external control of a system or configuration setting via the NETBOX_DT_LIBRARY_URL constant in a test file, which an unauthenticated pull-request author can modify. This leads to blind Git smart-HTTP requests to attacker-controlled hosts during test collection, allowing bypass of certain validation checks. The vulnerability is fixed in a specific commit.

Technical Analysis

The netbox-community devicetype-library contains a vulnerability where the NETBOX_DT_LIBRARY_URL constant in tests/test_configuration.py can be freely modified by an unauthenticated pull-request author before the validation test harness runs. During pytest test collection, this value is used in Git operations (Repo.clone_from and create_remote("upstream").fetch()), causing blind Git smart-HTTP requests to attacker-controlled hosts. Although these requests cannot set arbitrary metadata-service headers or return response bodies, and remote Git hooks are not executed, the attacker can substitute known data files to bypass slug, module, and rack uniqueness validation. This vulnerability is addressed and fixed in commit 8980c690097e92f5028c7e6df402b327d827ecd5.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated pull-request author to influence test validation by controlling Git clone and fetch operations to attacker-controlled hosts. This can lead to bypassing uniqueness validation for slugs, modules, and racks in the device type definitions. There is no impact on confidentiality or availability, but integrity of validation is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available and has been applied in commit 8980c690097e92f5028c7e6df402b327d827ecd5. Users of the netbox-community devicetype-library should update to the fixed version to remediate this vulnerability.
