CVE-2026-55448: CWE-78: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command ('OS Command Injection') in jdx mise

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-55448cvecve-2026-55448cwe-78
Published: 06/26/2026 (06/26/2026, 16:46:17 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: jdx
Product: mise

Description

mise manages dev tools like node, python, cmake, and terraform. From 2026.3.15 until 2026.6.4, mise loads github.credential_command from local project config before any trust decision, then executes that value with sh -c when resolving a GitHub token. An attacker who can place a .mise.toml in a repository can execute arbitrary shell commands when the victim runs a GitHub-related mise command and no higher-priority GitHub token environment variable is set. This vulnerability is fixed in 2026.6.4.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in jdx mise involves improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command (CWE-78). Specifically, from versions 2026.3.15 until 2026.6.4, mise reads the github.credential_command value from a local project configuration file before any trust decision is made. It then executes this value using 'sh -c' to resolve a GitHub token. This allows an attacker who can place a malicious .mise.toml file in a repository to execute arbitrary shell commands when a victim runs a GitHub-related mise command and no higher-priority GitHub token environment variable is set. The vulnerability is resolved in version 2026.6.4.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with the ability to add a .mise.toml file in a repository to execute arbitrary shell commands on the victim's system when they run GitHub-related mise commands without a higher-priority GitHub token environment variable. This can lead to high confidentiality and integrity impact, but no availability impact is indicated.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in jdx mise version 2026.6.4. Users should upgrade to version 2026.6.4 or later to remediate this issue. Until upgraded, avoid running GitHub-related mise commands in untrusted repositories or ensure a higher-priority GitHub token environment variable is set to prevent execution of the malicious credential_command.
