Description

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in NTFS-3G through version 2026.2.25 in the build_inherited_id() function. This flaw allows an attacker to corrupt heap memory in the SUID-root ntfs-3g binary by crafting a malicious NTFS image and triggering the overflow via file creation in a specially crafted directory.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-56135 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the build_inherited_id() function within libntfs-3g/security.c of NTFS-3G versions prior to 2026.2.25. The vulnerability can be exploited by an attacker who crafts a malicious NTFS image and creates a file in a crafted directory, causing heap memory corruption in the SUID-root ntfs-3g binary. This could potentially lead to privilege escalation or arbitrary code execution if exploited successfully.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to corrupt heap memory in the SUID-root ntfs-3g binary, which runs with elevated privileges. This could enable privilege escalation or arbitrary code execution under the root context. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or workaround information is provided in the available data.
