Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: AcademySoftwareFoundation
Product: openexr

Description

OpenEXR, a widely used image format implementation by the AcademySoftwareFoundation, has an out-of-bounds write vulnerability affecting ILP32 builds in versions 3.1.0 through 3.2.10, 3.3.0 through 3.3.12, and 3.4.0 through 3.4.13. The flaw occurs when processing a crafted B44-compressed scanline EXR file, leading to memory corruption and potential denial of service. This issue is resolved in versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-59984 describes an out-of-bounds write vulnerability (CWE-787) in the OpenEXR library on ILP32 builds. The vulnerability arises because the logical scratch size truncates before allocation when handling a malicious B44-compressed scanline EXR file. The function uncompress_b44_impl() then writes data using an attacker-controlled channel width, causing memory corruption and denial of service. The affected versions include 3.1.0 through 3.2.10, 3.3.0 through 3.3.12, and 3.4.0 through 3.4.13. The issue is fixed in versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can cause denial of service and memory corruption on affected ILP32 builds of OpenEXR. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The CVSS score is 5.5 (medium severity), reflecting local attack vector with low complexity and no privileges required but requiring user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OpenEXR to versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, or 3.4.14 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigations are specified.
