CVE-2026-68515: CWE-122: Heap-based Buffer Overflow in AcademySoftwareFoundation openexr
Description
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the AcademySoftwareFoundation openexr project affecting the exrmultiview utility. This occurs when combining two attacker-supplied, individually valid scanline EXR files with a misaligned union dataWindow relative to one view's channel subsampling. The issue leads to a heap out-of-bounds write during normal processing. Versions before 3.2.11, 3.3.0 through 3.3.12, and 3.4.0 through 3.4.13 are affected. The vulnerability is fixed in versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14.

Technical Analysis
OpenEXR's exrmultiview utility has a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-122, CWE-787) triggered by processing two valid scanline EXR files whose combined dataWindow is misaligned with one view's channel subsampling. The utility allocates sampled channel storage based on a truncated union_width divided by xSampling, but reads input through a Slice based on the misaligned union window, causing a heap out-of-bounds write. This can be triggered by normal usage of exrmultiview with crafted inputs. The flaw affects versions prior to 3.2.11, 3.3.0 through 3.3.12, and 3.4.0 through 3.4.13, and is resolved in 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows a heap out-of-bounds write, which can lead to denial of service or potentially arbitrary code execution. The CVSS v3.1 score is 7.1 (high severity) with impact on integrity and availability but no confidentiality impact. Exploitation requires local access (AV:L) and user interaction (UI:R).
Mitigation Recommendations
Fixed versions 3.2.11, 3.3.13, and 3.4.14 address this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the issue. No vendor advisory content is provided to indicate alternative mitigations or that no action is required.
