Vendor/Project: typelevel
Product: jawn

Description

Jawn is an open source JSON parser. Prior to 1.7.0, Jawn parse methods accept arbitrarily deep JSON array and object nesting without a depth limit, allowing a remote attacker who can submit untrusted JSON to grow parser contexts until the JVM heap is exhausted. The resulting java.lang.OutOfMemoryError is a fatal Scala error that is not ordinarily handled by scala.util.Try or cats.effect.IO, causing denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 1.7.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Jawn JSON parser (CVE-2026-59990) involves allocation of resources without limits or throttling (CWE-770). Specifically, versions before 1.7.0 allow parsing of JSON arrays and objects with unlimited nesting depth. A remote attacker submitting crafted JSON can cause the parser to exhaust JVM heap memory, triggering a fatal OutOfMemoryError in Scala that is not handled by common error handling mechanisms, causing denial of service. This flaw is resolved in version 1.7.0.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability results in denial of service due to JVM heap exhaustion and a fatal Scala error (java.lang.OutOfMemoryError). There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The denial of service can be triggered remotely by submitting malicious JSON data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Jawn version 1.7.0 or later, where this issue is fixed by imposing limits on JSON nesting depth. No other mitigation is required as the fix is official and available.
