Published: 07/20/2026 (07/20/2026, 14:23:20 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Syncope

Description

Improper Privilege Management vulnerability in Apache Syncope. When: * the all-Java user workflow adapter is configured, or * the Flowable user workflow adapter is configured, bearing a BPMN definition not requiring admin approval for user self registration of self update requests the following scenario could happen. A REST API call can allow the user to grant themselves one or more of defined Roles, thus gaining their Entitlements and becoming in fact an administrator; the actual Entitlements gained depend on the Roles that are effectively defined on the specific Syncope deployment. This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, from 4.0.0-M0 Through 4.0.6, from 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.7 / 4.1.2, which fix this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-62183 is an improper privilege management vulnerability (CWE-269) in Apache Syncope. When the all-Java or Flowable user workflow adapters are configured with BPMN definitions that do not require administrative approval for user self-registration or self-update requests, a user can exploit a REST API call to assign themselves one or more roles. This results in unauthorized privilege escalation, potentially granting administrative rights depending on the roles defined in the Syncope deployment. The vulnerability affects Apache Syncope versions 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. The vendor recommends upgrading to 4.0.7 or 4.1.2 to remediate the issue.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to escalate privileges by self-assigning roles via a REST API, potentially gaining administrative entitlements. The actual impact depends on the roles defined in the specific Syncope deployment, but it can lead to unauthorized administrative access.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Syncope to versions 4.0.7 or 4.1.2, which contain fixes for this vulnerability. No official patch or temporary workaround is detailed beyond upgrading. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor's recommendation to upgrade to these fixed versions.
