AI-suggested
A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-147.147, 6.8.0-1067.70, 7.0.0-1012.12~24.04.1, 6.8.0-1071.79, 7.0.0-1014.14~24.04.1, and others. Users and administrators should update to these fixed kernel versions to resolve the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's vfio subsystem could cause an infinite loop in the vfio_mig_get_next_state() function when encountering a blocked transition state. This results in a soft lockup and potentially a kernel panic if softlockup_panic is enabled. The issue arises because the loop does not properly handle the ERROR sentinel state, causing it to spin indefinitely while holding a driver state mutex. The flaw has been fixed in multiple Linux kernel versions.
