CVE-2026-64856: CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor in error311 FileRise
Description
FileRise versions prior to 3.20.0 have a vulnerability where the /api/file/snippet.php endpoint does not enforce the standard authenticated-session check before processing short text preview requests. While the endpoint still performs access control list (ACL) checks, unauthenticated requests can reach ACL evaluation instead of being immediately rejected with a 401 response. Exploitation requires unusual proxy-header or ACL misconfiguration. This issue is fixed in version 3.20.0.

Technical Analysis
FileRise, a self-hosted web-based file manager, has a vulnerability (CVE-2026-64856) in versions before 3.20.0 where the /api/file/snippet.php endpoint fails to apply the standard authenticated-session guard before processing short text preview requests. Although the endpoint performs ACL checks, unauthenticated requests can bypass the immediate authentication rejection and reach ACL evaluation. Exploitation requires additional unusual proxy-header or ACL misconfiguration to allow unauthenticated access to file path and content handling. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information) and CWE-306 (Missing Authentication for Critical Function). The issue is resolved in version 3.20.0.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability allows unauthenticated requests to reach ACL evaluation on the /api/file/snippet.php endpoint, potentially exposing sensitive information if there is an unusual proxy-header or ACL misconfiguration. Normal installations do not allow unauthenticated arbitrary file reads. The impact is limited to information disclosure with a low CVSS score of 3.7, indicating low severity.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade FileRise to version 3.20.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. There is no indication that additional mitigations are required if the software is updated. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 3.20.0.
