Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Answer

Description

Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') vulnerability in Apache Answer. This issue affects Apache Answer: through 2.0.2. The importer stores imported question bodies as raw HTML without passing them through the normal Markdown-to-HTML sanitization path, so attacker-controlled HTML embedded in an imported data source is persisted and rendered to all viewers (including privileged users) as stored XSS. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 2.0.3, which fixes the issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-64944 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in Apache Answer affecting versions up to 2.0.2. The vulnerability arises because the importer component stores imported question bodies as raw HTML without sanitizing them through the standard Markdown-to-HTML sanitization process. This allows attacker-supplied HTML embedded in imported data sources to be persisted and rendered to all viewers, including privileged users, leading to stored XSS.

Potential Impact

An attacker can inject malicious HTML/JavaScript into imported question bodies, which is then stored and rendered to all users, including privileged users. This can lead to execution of arbitrary scripts in the context of the affected users, potentially compromising user sessions or performing unauthorized actions within the application.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Answer to version 2.0.3, which fixes the vulnerability by properly sanitizing imported content. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
