A fix is available in Linux kernel commit 2dfe9f5c91d0963058f8a5e46e1c2a908382cc46. Users and administrators should update to the fixed kernel version or apply the patch to prevent data loss caused by this vulnerability.

Description

CVE-2026-68086 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's memory management subsystem (khugepaged) that can cause data loss. The issue arises when collapsing transparent huge pages (THPs) for files opened writable, leading to dirty file folios being discarded improperly. This occurs due to an edge case where collapse_file() coexists with dirty folios from previous writers, resulting in data loss when the page cache is truncated without writing back dirty pages. The vulnerability affects Linux kernel version 5.4 and has been fixed in commit 2dfe9f5c91d0963058f8a5e46e1c2a908382cc46.
