Description

CVE-2026-69194 is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in FileRise, a self-hosted web-based file manager. Versions prior to 3.21.0 expose the stored branding.footerHtml value via an unauthenticated public configuration API without server-side sanitization. Although the frontend sanitizes this value before rendering, the raw HTML exposure could be unsafe for alternate clients or future rendering methods. The vulnerability requires an administrator to store a malicious footer value. This issue is fixed in FileRise version 3.21.0.

Technical Analysis

FileRise versions before 3.21.0 have an improper neutralization of input vulnerability (CWE-79) where the branding.footerHtml value is returned raw through an unauthenticated public site configuration API. While the frontend sanitizes this value using an allowlist, the API exposes the raw admin-provided HTML, which could be unsafe for clients other than the current frontend or for future rendering paths. Exploitation requires an administrator to input malicious footer HTML. The vulnerability is addressed in version 3.21.0.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows exposure of raw HTML content via an unauthenticated API, which could lead to cross-site scripting attacks if alternate clients or future render paths do not sanitize the input properly. The impact is limited by the requirement that an administrator must first store the malicious footer HTML. The CVSS score is 4.8 (medium severity), indicating limited confidentiality and integrity impact with no availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade FileRise to version 3.21.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. The fix involves sanitizing the branding.footerHtml value server-side before returning it via the public configuration API. No other mitigations are specified or required.
