Vendor/Project: opnsense
Product: core

Description

CVE-2026-71490 is an incorrect authorization vulnerability in OPNsense core prior to version 26.1.11. The issue arises from how the hasPrivilege() function processes directly assigned comma-separated privilege values, causing a user with both a write privilege and user-config-readonly to bypass read-only restrictions. This allows unauthorized configuration changes via MVC APIs protected by throwReadOnly(). The flaw does not affect group privileges due to different parsing logic. The vulnerability is fixed in version 26.1.11.

Technical Analysis

OPNsense core versions before 26.1.11 contain an authorization flaw in the hasPrivilege() method of OPNsense\Core\ACL. The method appends directly assigned comma-separated privilege values as a single string and performs an exact comparison against 'user-config-readonly'. If a user is assigned both a component write privilege and user-config-readonly directly, the exact string comparison fails to recognize the read-only restriction, allowing configuration changes through MVC APIs protected by throwReadOnly(). Group privileges are unaffected because their parsing splits comma-separated values correctly. This vulnerability is resolved in OPNsense version 26.1.11.

Potential Impact

An attacker with a user account assigned both a write privilege and user-config-readonly directly can bypass read-only restrictions and make unauthorized configuration changes to components via MVC APIs. This could lead to unauthorized modification of firewall or routing configurations, impacting system integrity and availability. There is no indication of confidentiality impact. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade OPNsense core to version 26.1.11 or later, where this authorization flaw is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
