A patch is available and has been applied in Linux kernel versions 5.15.0-1117.124 and later, as well as other specified fixed versions. Users should update to these fixed kernel versions to resolve the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required as the enforcement mechanism is unaffected.
Description
CVE-2026-72068 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's posix-cpu-timers implementation affecting 32-bit kernels. The issue arises from incorrect 32-bit multiplication when converting RLIMIT_CPU values to nanoseconds, causing premature CPU timer expiry for soft limits of 5 seconds or more. This flaw does not affect 64-bit kernels and does not break limit enforcement, only the expiry-cache programming. The vulnerability has been fixed in multiple Linux kernel versions starting from 5.15.0-1117.124 and related releases.
