An official patch is available that restores the correct handling of the thread keyring to ensure the volume key is wiped from memory on 'cryptsetup luksSuspend'. Users should apply the updated Linux kernel versions containing this fix. Since the vulnerability requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileges, restricting administrative access also mitigates risk.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel device-mapper subsystem caused the caller's thread keyring to remain alive longer than intended, leading to a failure in wiping the LUKS volume key from memory during 'cryptsetup luksSuspend'. This issue was introduced by a refactoring commit and affects certain Linux kernel versions. The flaw allows the volume key to remain recoverable in RAM after suspend, contrary to expected behavior. The vulnerability is gated by CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileges. A fix restoring the previous behavior has been released.
