Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 19:11:19 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Elastic
Product: Kibana

Description

Incorrect Authorization (CWE-863) in Kibana can lead to unauthorized deletion of Synthetics private locations via Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs (CAPEC-1). Synthetics private locations can be shared with more than one space, and deleting one removes it from every space it is shared with. The safeguard that prevented the deletion of a private location still in use evaluated only the monitors visible in the requesting user's own space, so monitors that depend on the private location in other spaces were not taken into account. As a result, an authenticated Kibana user holding the Synthetics write privilege in a single space could delete a private location that other spaces still depend on, even where the user has no access to those spaces. Deleting the private location removes the shared configuration and stops the monitors in the other spaces from running, which suppresses the availability monitoring those spaces rely on.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-863) in Elastic Kibana concerns incorrect authorization in the management of Synthetics private locations. Private locations can be shared among multiple spaces, but the deletion safeguard only considers monitors in the requesting user's space. Consequently, a user with write privileges in one space can delete a private location still in use by monitors in other spaces where the user has no access. This leads to unintended deletion of shared configurations and halts monitoring in those other spaces.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with Synthetics write privileges in a single Kibana space can delete a private location shared with other spaces, causing monitoring in those other spaces to stop. This results in suppression of availability monitoring dependent on the deleted private location, potentially impacting operational visibility and alerting in those spaces. There is no direct confidentiality impact, but integrity and availability are affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict Synthetics write privileges carefully and monitor user actions related to private location management to prevent unauthorized deletions.
