Technical Analysis

This vulnerability allows a remote attacker with authentication privileges to overwrite arbitrary files on the filesystem of Advantech EKI-1242IEIMS devices by exploiting the backup-restore functionality. The flaw is due to insufficient validation of file names or paths in the uploaded backup archive, classified as CWE-73. The affected firmware versions are from initial releases up to and including version 1.06.01. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.6, indicating high severity, with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no user interaction required, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an authenticated remote attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the device, potentially leading to system compromise or disruption of device operations. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the device's filesystem.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict access to the web management interface to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to backup-restore operations.
