Published: 10/05/2026 (10/05/2026, 18:34:23 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Rapid7
Product: Velociraptor

Description

Velociraptor's SetClientMetadata used the wrong permission check to enforce setting metadata on the server. This allows a user with LABEL_CLIENTS permission to update the server metadata. Server metadata is often used to store site wide configuration data that should only be updated by the server admin.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-78411 in Rapid7 Velociraptor involves improper permission validation in the SetClientMetadata function. Specifically, the function enforces metadata updates on the server using the wrong permission check, permitting users who have LABEL_CLIENTS permission to modify server metadata. Since server metadata typically holds critical site-wide configuration data, unauthorized modifications could disrupt configuration integrity. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 6.5, reflecting a medium severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and limited privileges required but no user interaction needed. The impact is primarily on integrity, with no confidentiality or availability impact reported.

Potential Impact

An attacker with LABEL_CLIENTS permission can update server metadata, which is intended only for server administrators. This could lead to unauthorized changes in site-wide configuration data, potentially affecting the integrity of the system's configuration. There is no reported impact on confidentiality or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict LABEL_CLIENTS permissions to trusted users only to minimize risk. Monitor for updates from Rapid7 regarding patches or official mitigations.
