CVE-2026-79661: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling in lin-snow Ech0

0
Medium
Published: 08/25/2026 (08/25/2026, 11:33:25 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: lin-snow
Product: Ech0

Description

Ech0 versions prior to 4.7.3 have a vulnerability in the PUT /api/echo/like/:id endpoint that allows unauthenticated attackers to increment the fav_count of any echo, including private ones, without rate limiting. This can be exploited to artificially inflate popularity metrics and cause increased load on the database and cache. The issue is fixed in version 4.7.3.

Technical Analysis

Ech0 through version 4.5.6 exposes a PUT /api/echo/like/:id endpoint on the public router group without authentication or rate limiting. Attackers can supply the UUID of any echo, harvested from the public GET /api/echo/page feed, to increment its fav_count repeatedly. Each request triggers a database write and cache invalidation without deduplication, enabling resource exhaustion and manipulation of popularity metrics. This vulnerability is addressed in Ech0 version 4.7.3.

Potential Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can inflate the fav_count metric of any echo, including private echoes, causing inaccurate popularity data. The repeated requests also amplify load on the backend database and cache systems, potentially degrading service performance or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Ech0 to version 4.7.3 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Prior versions lack authentication and rate limiting on the affected endpoint, so patching is the recommended remediation.
