Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: 0xJacky
Product: nginx-ui

Description

Nginx UI versions prior to 2.4.1 have a missing authorization control on multiple authenticated mutation routes. This flaw allows an attacker with a stolen authenticated session to perform sensitive actions such as modifying backups, DNS credentials, certificates, and Nginx settings without completing the required OTP or passkey verification. The issue is resolved in version 2.4.1.

Technical Analysis

Nginx UI, a web interface for the Nginx web server, did not enforce the RequireSecureSession control on several authenticated mutation routes before version 2.4.1. This omission allowed attackers possessing a stolen authenticated session to bypass the expected OTP or passkey step-up authentication for sensitive operations. Actions that could be performed include creating or altering automatic backups, DNS credentials and records, certificates and ACME users, Nginx control settings, and site or stream automation. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-862 (Missing Authorization) and has a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.3, indicating high severity. The issue is fixed in version 2.4.1.

Potential Impact

An attacker who obtains a valid authenticated session can bypass additional OTP or passkey verification steps and perform high-impact actions such as modifying backups, DNS credentials, certificates, and Nginx control settings. This could lead to unauthorized configuration changes, service disruption, or compromise of sensitive data. The confidentiality impact is low, but integrity and availability impacts are high.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Nginx UI version 2.4.1 or later, where this missing authorization issue is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 2.4.1.
