Technical Analysis

The GTranslate WordPress plugin versions prior to 5.0.1 do not sanitize outgoing email content by removing shortcodes before expansion. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers, in non-default configurations, to trigger execution of arbitrary shortcodes registered on the site server side. The vulnerability is categorized as CWE-74 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Output Used by a Downstream Component, 'Injection'). The CVSS 3.1 base score is 4.8, reflecting network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and limited confidentiality and integrity impacts.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can cause arbitrary registered shortcodes to be executed on the server by exploiting the lack of shortcode removal in outgoing email content. This may lead to limited confidentiality and integrity compromise of the affected WordPress site. There is no indication of availability impact or known active exploitation in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version 5.0.1 of the GTranslate plugin is available that addresses this issue. Users should upgrade to version 5.0.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory or CVE data.
