Published: 09/14/2026 (09/14/2026, 10:22:29 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Syncope

Description

Apache Syncope contains an improper verification of cryptographic signature vulnerability (CWE-347) affecting versions from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.7, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.2. When the Syncope Reverse Proxy (SRA) is configured for OAuth 2.0 without a JWKS set URI assigned, an attacker can forge arbitrary JWT tokens to impersonate any user and gain full access to services proxied by SRA. Fixed versions 4.0.8 and 4.1.3 address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-87802 describes a vulnerability in Apache Syncope where improper verification of cryptographic signatures (CWE-347) occurs if the Syncope Reverse Proxy (SRA) is configured for OAuth 2.0 without specifying a JWKS set URI. This misconfiguration allows attackers to forge JSON Web Tokens (JWTs), enabling them to impersonate any user identity and permissions, thereby gaining full access to services behind the proxy. The vulnerability affects Apache Syncope versions >=3.0.0-M0 <=3.0.16, >=4.0.0-M0 <=4.0.7, and >=4.1.0-M0 <=4.1.2. Upgrading to versions 4.0.8 or 4.1.3 mitigates the issue.

Potential Impact

An attacker exploiting this vulnerability can forge arbitrary JWTs to impersonate any user, including those with elevated permissions, resulting in unauthorized full access to services proxied by the Syncope Reverse Proxy. This can lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or other actions permitted by the impersonated user’s privileges.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Syncope to version 4.0.8 or 4.1.3, which contain fixes for this vulnerability. Proper configuration of the Syncope Reverse Proxy to include a JWKS set URI for OAuth 2.0 is also essential to prevent exploitation.
