AI-suggested

Red Hat states that available mitigation options do not meet their criteria for ease of use, applicability, or stability. Users should ensure default configurations that mount a fresh /dev inside containers are used, as these are not exposed to the vulnerability. Monitor Red Hat advisories for updates and apply patches once they become available.

Description

CVE-2026-88265 is a vulnerability in crun versions 1.29.1 and earlier used in Red Hat Hardened Images. The flaw allows a non-root container process to follow a symlink after pivot_root when reopening /dev/null for stdio, potentially attaching a host file to container stdio and changing its ownership. This issue requires specific conditions, such as a malicious container image replacing /dev/null with a symlink and the absence of a mounted /dev inside the container. Default configurations that mount a fresh /dev are not affected. No fixed release is available yet.
