Technical Analysis

The Clean Login WordPress plugin prior to version 1.19 contains an incorrect comparison vulnerability (CWE-697) where the registration CAPTCHA verification is skipped if the stored session value is empty. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass the CAPTCHA protection on the registration form and create accounts without completing the CAPTCHA challenge.

Potential Impact

An attacker can create accounts on the affected WordPress site without solving the CAPTCHA, potentially facilitating automated account creation or spam. The confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts are limited as per the CVSS vector, with only low confidentiality impact and no impact on integrity or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Clean Login plugin to version 1.19 or later where this vulnerability is fixed. Since no official patch link is provided, users should verify the availability of the fix from the plugin vendor or official WordPress plugin repository. Until patched, consider disabling the registration feature or adding additional anti-automation controls.
