A fix is available that validates the PD capability counts before copying them into the fixed-size array, preventing out-of-bounds writes. Systems running affected Linux kernel versions should apply the official kernel updates that include this validation. Since the ChromeOS EC firmware caps these counts, compliant setups are not vulnerable, but kernel-side validation is necessary for full mitigation.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ChromeOS platform cros_ec_typec driver allows out-of-bounds memory writes due to improper validation of PD capability counts. The function cros_typec_register_partner_pdos() copies partner PDOs into a fixed-size array without verifying that the counts do not exceed the array size, potentially causing stack overflow. ChromeOS EC firmware currently caps these counts, preventing exploitation in compliant setups. The kernel patch validates these counts to prevent out-of-bounds writes while continuing to handle other events.
