Published: 08/02/2026 (08/02/2026, 03:49:25 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: keras-team
Product: keras-team/keras

Description

Keras versions up to and including 3.14.0 contain a path traversal vulnerability due to improper handling of HDF5 ExternalLinks in certain functions. This flaw allows crafted .h5, .weights.h5, or .keras files with malicious ExternalLinks to cause disclosure of arbitrary local HDF5 file contents. The vulnerability arises because KerasFileEditor and keras.saving.load_weights bypass safety checks intended to block ExternalLinks and SoftLinks, leading to automatic dereferencing of external files on the local filesystem.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-9335 is a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in keras-team/keras versions <= 3.14.0. The issue stems from the KerasFileEditor and keras.saving.load_weights functions bypassing the safe_get_h5_group and safe_get_h5_dataset helpers, which are designed to reject HDF5 ExternalLinks and SoftLinks. This bypass enables automatic dereferencing of ExternalLinks to external HDF5 files, allowing an attacker to disclose arbitrary local file contents by providing malicious HDF5 files containing such links. The vulnerability affects local file confidentiality but does not impact integrity or availability.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft malicious HDF5-based files that, when loaded by vulnerable Keras functions, cause disclosure of arbitrary local HDF5 file contents on the victim's system. This compromises confidentiality of local data accessible via HDF5 ExternalLinks. There is no indication of integrity or availability impact. The vulnerability requires user interaction (loading a malicious file) and network access is not required for exploitation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid loading untrusted or unauthenticated .h5, .weights.h5, or .keras files that may contain ExternalLinks. Monitor official keras-team communications for updates and patches addressing this vulnerability.
