Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-94257 describes a privilege management vulnerability in the SMS Alert WordPress plugin versions 3.9.6 up to but not including 4.0.1. The plugin fails to ensure that the account for which the password reset is requested matches the phone number verified via OTP. As a result, an attacker can reset the password of an arbitrary user account, including administrators, by verifying a one-time password sent to a phone number under their control. This vulnerability enables unauthorized account takeover via the password reset mechanism.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can reset the password of any user account, including administrator accounts, thereby gaining unauthorized access and full control over the affected WordPress site. This can lead to site compromise, data theft, or further malicious activity.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in SMS Alert plugin version 4.0.1. Users should upgrade to version 4.0.1 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigation is indicated.
