Published: 09/23/2026 (09/23/2026, 16:29:51 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: moquette-io
Product: moquette

Description

Moquette is a lightweight Java MQTT broker. Prior to 0.18.1, the broker does not enforce a maximum length for pending per-session message queues. When a fast publisher sends messages to a slow subscriber whose in-flight window is full, queued messages can accumulate without bound in memory or persistent storage. Remote clients can use this condition to exhaust broker resources and cause a denial of service. This issue is fixed in version 0.18.1.

Technical Analysis

The Moquette MQTT broker before version 0.18.1 does not enforce limits on the length of pending message queues per session. When a fast publisher sends messages faster than a slow subscriber can process, and the subscriber's in-flight window is full, messages accumulate without bound. This lack of throttling or resource allocation limits can be exploited remotely to exhaust broker resources, resulting in denial of service. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) and has a CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (high severity). The issue is resolved in Moquette version 0.18.1.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can cause denial of service by exhausting broker resources through unbounded accumulation of queued messages. This affects the availability of the Moquette MQTT broker service.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to Moquette version 0.18.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed by enforcing maximum lengths on pending per-session message queues. No other mitigation is required as the fix is official and available.
