Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: getkin
Product: kin-openapi

Description

kin-openapi versions from 0.136.0 up to but not including 0.143.0 contain a vulnerability where the openapi3filter component accepts OpenAPI 3.1 array schemas without the required items keyword. This leads to a nil-pointer panic during request or response validation when handling certain content types. The issue is fixed in version 0.143.0.

Technical Analysis

The kin-openapi Go project, specifically versions >=0.136.0 and <0.143.0, has a vulnerability in the openapi3filter module. It improperly accepts OpenAPI 3.1 array schemas missing the items keyword and then dereferences a nil Schema.Items pointer during decoding of application/x-www-form-urlencoded or multipart/form-data request bodies, response headers, and other array parameter surfaces. This causes a nil-pointer panic during ValidateRequest or ValidateResponse calls. OpenAPI 3.0 documents are not affected because they reject arrays without items, and JSON request bodies use a different decoding path. The vulnerability is resolved in version 0.143.0.

Potential Impact

A remote unauthenticated attacker can trigger a denial of service by causing the application to panic due to a nil-pointer dereference. This results in an availability impact but does not affect confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade kin-openapi to version 0.143.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated.
