Description

CVE-2026-9926 is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the ANGLE component of Google Chrome versions prior to 148.0.7778.216. This flaw could allow a remote attacker who has already compromised the renderer process to potentially escape the sandbox by using a specially crafted HTML page. The vulnerability is rated high severity with a CVSS score of 8.3. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at this time. A stable channel update addressing this issue has been released by Google.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a heap buffer overflow in the ANGLE graphics engine within Google Chrome before version 148.0.7778.216. An attacker with control over the renderer process could exploit this flaw to perform a sandbox escape, increasing the potential impact of a renderer compromise. The issue is classified as high severity with a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.3, reflecting network attack vector, high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and requiring user interaction with high attack complexity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker who has compromised the renderer process to escape the Chrome sandbox, potentially leading to full system compromise or execution of arbitrary code outside the browser sandbox. This elevates the risk posed by any prior renderer compromise.

Mitigation Recommendations

Google has released a stable channel update (version 148.0.7778.216) that addresses this vulnerability. Users and administrators should update to this version or later to remediate the issue. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory. No additional mitigations are specified.
