Vendor/Project: AcademySoftwareFoundation
Product: openexr

Description

CVE-2026-27622 is a high-severity vulnerability in the AcademySoftwareFoundation's openexr library, an implementation of the EXR image file format. The flaw is an out-of-bounds write caused by integer overflow in the CompositeDeepScanLine::readPixels function, where attacker-controlled large counts cause vector size wrapping and buffer overruns during sample decoding. This can lead to arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability affects multiple version ranges and has been fixed in versions 3.2.6, 3.3.8, and 3.4.6.

Technical Analysis

The openexr library contains an out-of-bounds write vulnerability (CWE-787) in the CompositeDeepScanLine::readPixels function. Specifically, per-pixel totals are accumulated in a vector<unsigned int> which can wrap modulo 2^32 due to attacker-controlled large counts. This wrapping causes the overall_sample_count to be underestimated, leading to undersized buffer allocation. Subsequent write operations in the generic_unpack_deep_pointers function then overrun this buffer, enabling arbitrary code execution. The issue is addressed by fixes in openexr versions 3.2.6, 3.3.8, and 3.4.6.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can result in arbitrary code execution due to buffer overflow caused by integer overflow and out-of-bounds write. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.4 (high severity), reflecting local attack vector with low complexity, no privileges required, user interaction needed, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available and has been released in openexr versions 3.2.6, 3.3.8, and 3.4.6. Users and administrators should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the vulnerability. Red Hat has issued security advisories and updated packages for affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions. Applying these vendor-provided updates is the recommended mitigation.
