Technical Analysis

Exim before version 4.99.5 improperly handles arguments related to queue-name, enabling directory traversal that allows access to files outside the mail spool directory. This can lead to privilege escalation. The vulnerability affects many Ubuntu-packaged versions of Exim4. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) indicates a local attacker can exploit this without privileges or user interaction, causing high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with local access to traverse directories outside the mail spool area and gain elevated privileges, potentially compromising system confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Exim version 4.99.5 and later. Users should upgrade to version 4.99.5 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. Patch status is confirmed by the version cutoff. No vendor advisory content was provided to indicate alternative mitigations or no-action status.
