Description
FFmpeg versions before 8.1.3 have an infinite loop vulnerability in the HLS demuxer. This flaw allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by exploiting the parse_playlist() function, which improperly accepts Master Playlist tags inside Media Playlists. Crafted self-referencing playlists can cause unbounded CPU and I/O consumption, leading to service disruption.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in FFmpeg before version 8.1.3 is due to the HLS demuxer's parse_playlist() function accepting Master Playlist tags within Media Playlists. This enables attackers to create a crafted self-referencing playlist that causes the hls_read_header() function to enter an infinite loop, resulting in unbounded CPU and I/O resource consumption. This leads to a denial of service condition. The CVSS 3.1 score is 6.5 (High), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, but high availability impact.
Potential Impact
Remote attackers can cause a denial of service by triggering an infinite loop in the HLS demuxer, leading to excessive CPU and I/O usage and potentially crashing or severely degrading the affected system's performance.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in FFmpeg version 8.1.3. Users should upgrade to version 8.1.3 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No other mitigation guidance is provided.
