Description

FFmpeg versions through 9.0.2 have a denial of service vulnerability in the DASH demuxer. This flaw allows an attacker to cause an infinite loop by providing an empty SegmentTemplate media URL in an .mpd manifest. The vulnerability leads to excessive CPU consumption, resulting in a denial of service condition.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FFmpeg up to version 9.0.2 exists in the DASH demuxer component. When processing an .mpd manifest that declares SegmentTemplate media="", the function get_current_fragment() calls av_strireplace() with an empty search string. This triggers an infinite loop, causing the CPU to be consumed indefinitely and resulting in a denial of service.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause FFmpeg to enter an infinite loop, consuming CPU resources indefinitely. This leads to a denial of service condition, potentially disrupting media processing or playback using the affected FFmpeg versions.
