Description

FFmpeg versions through 8.1.2 contain a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the vf_hqdn3d filter. This occurs when a crafted video input with increasing frame resolution is processed with filtergraph reinitialization disabled (-reinit_filter 0). The vulnerability allows heap memory corruption due to undersized buffer allocation for line-history, leading to out-of-bounds writes during denoising. This issue is fixed in commit 5d7112c.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FFmpeg (up to version 8.1.2) involves a heap out-of-bounds write in the vf_hqdn3d filter. When the filtergraph reinitialization is disabled, the function vf_hqdn3d.config_input() allocates line-history buffers based on the initial frame width. If subsequent frames have a larger resolution, the denoise_spatial() function writes beyond the allocated buffer boundary, causing heap memory corruption. This can be triggered by supplying a crafted video with increasing frame resolution between frames. The issue is tracked as CVE-2026-66036 and fixed in commit 5d7112c.

Potential Impact

Heap memory corruption can lead to application crashes or potentially arbitrary code execution if exploited. The vulnerability requires an attacker to supply a malicious video input with increasing frame resolution and the filtergraph reinitialization disabled. There are no known exploits in the wild as of the published date.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in FFmpeg as of commit 5d7112c. Users should update to a version including this commit or later to remediate the vulnerability. No other mitigation or workaround is documented.
