Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in FileGator arises from the '/chmoditems' API endpoint accepting arbitrary Unix permission values and passing them directly to PHP's chmod() function after octdec() conversion without any validation. This lack of validation enables an authenticated user who has 'chmod' permission to escalate their privileges to root, representing a significant security risk. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-63358 and is classified under CWE-732 (Incorrect Permission Assignment for Critical Resource). There is no information about affected versions or available patches.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with 'chmod' permission can exploit this vulnerability to escalate their privileges to root, potentially gaining full control over the system. This can lead to unauthorized access, modification, or destruction of critical files and system resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict 'chmod' permissions to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity related to permission changes.
