AI-suggested
A patch is available in filelock version 4.2.1 or later (the description states affected versions up to 4.2.0; establishedFacts.fixedVersions lists 2.19.0_2 but that appears inconsistent with the filelock versioning—recommend verifying the vendor advisory for exact fixed versions). Users should upgrade to the fixed version to resolve this issue. Additionally, ensure that lock directories are not writable by untrusted users or are configured with the sticky bit to prevent unauthorized file replacement. On Linux, enabling kernel protections such as fs.protected_regular=2 can help prevent unauthorized file creation or replacement in shared directories. If these conditions are met, the vulnerability cannot be exploited. No other mitigation is required once patched.
Description
A vulnerability in filelock's ReadWriteLock and AsyncReadWriteLock components allows a local user who can place or overwrite the SQLite lock database file to cause every acquire operation to stall or hang indefinitely, ignoring timeout and blocking settings. This results in a denial of service affecting availability only, with no confidentiality or integrity impact. The issue affects filelock versions 3.20.4 through 4.2.0 and requires the attacker to have write access to the lock file path or directory. The vulnerability is rated medium severity with a CVSS score of 5.5.
