Description

picklescan versions before 0.0.30 fail to detect the asyncio.unix_events._UnixSubprocessTransport._start function when used in pickle reduce methods. This allows attackers to craft malicious pickle files that evade detection but execute arbitrary commands upon loading, leading to remote code execution.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in picklescan prior to version 0.0.30 involves a failure to detect the use of the built-in function asyncio.unix_events._UnixSubprocessTransport._start within pickle reduce methods. This flaw enables attackers to embed this function in malicious pickle files that bypass detection mechanisms. When such a crafted pickle file is loaded, it can execute arbitrary commands remotely, representing a critical security risk classified under CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data).

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote code execution by loading malicious pickle files that embed the vulnerable function. This can lead to unauthorized command execution on the affected system. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid loading pickle files from untrusted sources to mitigate risk.
