GHSA-g84h-j7jj-x32p: @aborruso/ckan-mcp-server: SSRF via base_url allows access to internal networks (Potential fix bypass of CVE-2026-33060)

Description

A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability exists in @aborruso/ckan-mcp-server versions prior to 0.4.106. The issue arises because the server validates only the hostname string when processing caller-supplied base_url parameters, allowing hostname aliases like 'ip6-localhost' to bypass filters and resolve to loopback addresses. This enables remote attackers to make the server connect to internal or private network addresses and potentially access response data. A fix was implemented by expanding the blocked hostname list to include these aliases.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability (CVE-2026-53509) in @aborruso/ckan-mcp-server involves insufficient hostname validation in the base_url parameter used by CKAN tools. The server only checked if the hostname was exactly 'localhost' to block SSRF attempts, but aliases such as 'ip6-localhost' were not blocked and resolved to loopback addresses. This allowed attackers to bypass the SSRF filter and make the server perform HTTP requests to internal network endpoints, potentially exposing sensitive data from CKAN-shaped responses. The issue was addressed by replacing the single hostname check with a set of blocked hostnames including 'ip6-localhost' and 'ip6-loopback'.

Potential Impact

An attacker with the ability to invoke CKAN tools with a server_url parameter can cause the server to make HTTP requests to internal or private network addresses. This can lead to unauthorized access to internal network resources or data leakage from internal services responding with CKAN-shaped data. The vulnerability does not impact integrity or availability but has a high confidentiality impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in versions 0.4.106 and later, which expands the blocked hostname list to cover hostname aliases that resolve to loopback addresses. Users should upgrade to version 0.4.106 or later to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
