Description

picklescan versions before 0.0.29 fail to detect malicious pickle payloads that exploit lib2to3.pgen2.grammar.Grammar.loads in the reduce method. This allows attackers to craft pickle files that evade detection and execute arbitrary code during deserialization with pickle.load(). The vulnerability is categorized as CWE-502 (Deserialization of Untrusted Data) and has a high severity rating.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in picklescan prior to version 0.0.29 involves insufficient detection of malicious pickle payloads that leverage the lib2to3.pgen2.grammar.Grammar.loads function within the reduce method. This flaw enables remote code execution by allowing attackers to embed dangerous code in pickle files that bypass picklescan's detection mechanisms and execute upon deserialization via pickle.load(). No patch or remediation is currently indicated in the provided data.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the system during the deserialization process of malicious pickle files. This can lead to full compromise of the affected environment where untrusted pickle data is processed without proper validation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid deserializing pickle data from untrusted or unauthenticated sources. Consider implementing additional application-level validation or sandboxing of deserialization operations to reduce risk.
