AI-suggested

A fix is available in GitPython version 3.1.53 and later. Users should upgrade to this version or newer to remediate the vulnerability. Until patched, avoid using untrusted submodule names or repositories that may contain malicious submodule names. No other mitigations are documented.

Description

GitPython versions up to 3.1.52 contain a vulnerability where specially crafted submodule names can inject arbitrary configuration directives into the .git/config file. This occurs because section names in the config are not properly escaped, allowing an attacker to inject directives like core.sshCommand, which can lead to remote code execution on the victim's next git operation.
