AI-suggested

Users should avoid calling Submodule.move() on paths that may include attacker-controlled symlinks. Applications consuming untrusted repositories should validate or sanitize paths passed to Submodule.move() to ensure no symlink traversal outside the worktree occurs. Monitor vendor advisories for any forthcoming official fixes or updates addressing this issue.

Description

GitPython's Submodule.move() API does not properly handle symbolic links in intermediate path components, allowing an attacker-controlled symlink to redirect a submodule move operation outside the parent repository worktree. This can cause the submodule checkout to be moved to an attacker-selected directory outside the repository, corrupting the repository's index and configuration state. The issue requires an attacker-controlled repository with a symlink and an application that calls Submodule.move() with a path under that symlink. No code execution or confidentiality impact is demonstrated.
