Description

A heap buffer overflow vulnerability exists in PostgreSQL's to_char function for timestamptz data types. This flaw allows an attacker who controls the timezone input to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the database operating system user by providing a long POSIX timezone abbreviation. Multiple PostgreSQL versions prior to 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, and 18.5 are affected. A patch is available to address this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-14669 is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in the PostgreSQL to_char(timestamptz) function. The vulnerability arises when the timezone is chosen by an attacker who can supply a long POSIX timezone abbreviation, leading to arbitrary code execution as the OS user running the database. Affected versions include PostgreSQL releases before 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, and 18.5. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-122 (Heap-based Buffer Overflow). A patch is available to remediate this issue.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the operating system with the privileges of the database user. This could lead to full compromise of the database server environment depending on the privileges of the database OS user.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to PostgreSQL versions 14.24, 15.19, 16.15, 17.11, 18.5 or later to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
