Description

Apache CloudStack contains an OS Command Injection vulnerability in its NAS backup provider plugin. The addBackupRepository and updateBackupRepository APIs accept unsanitized command options, allowing a malicious operator to inject arbitrary commands executed on the KVM hypervisor host during backup restore operations. This affects versions from 4.20.0.0 through 4.20.3.0 and 4.21.0.0 through 4.22.1.0. Fixed versions are 4.20.3.1 and 4.22.1.1 or later.

Affected software

org.apache.cloudstack/cloudstack
pkg:maven/org.apache.cloudstack/cloudstack
Affected versions
>=4.20.0.0 <=4.20.3.0>=4.21.0.0 <=4.22.1.0

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-47359 is an OS Command Injection vulnerability in Apache CloudStack's NAS backup provider plugin. The addBackupRepository API (since 4.20.0.0) and updateBackupRepository API (since 4.22.0.0) accept unsanitized command options for backup repositories. A malicious operator account can exploit this flaw to inject arbitrary OS commands that execute on the KVM hypervisor host when any account performs a backup restore. The vulnerability affects Apache CloudStack versions 4.20.0.0 through 4.20.3.0 and 4.21.0.0 through 4.22.1.0. The issue is resolved in versions 4.20.3.1 and 4.22.1.1 and later.

Potential Impact

A malicious operator account can execute arbitrary OS commands on the KVM hypervisor host during backup restore operations, potentially leading to unauthorized command execution at the host level. This could compromise the host system and affect all virtual machines running on it.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache CloudStack to version 4.20.3.1 or 4.22.1.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are specified. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory information embedded in the description.
