Source: GCVE Database

Description

Apache Syncope contains an Improper Privilege Management vulnerability (CVE-2026-62183) affecting versions from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. When configured with certain user workflow adapters and BPMN definitions that do not require admin approval for user self-registration or self-update requests, a REST API call can allow a user to escalate privileges by granting themselves one or more defined Roles. This results in unauthorized administrative access depending on the roles defined in the deployment. Users are advised to upgrade to versions 4.0.7 or 4.1.2 to remediate this issue.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-62183 is an Improper Privilege Management vulnerability in Apache Syncope. It occurs when the all-Java or Flowable user workflow adapters are configured with BPMN definitions that do not require administrative approval for user self-registration or self-update requests. Under these conditions, an attacker can exploit a REST API call to assign themselves one or more roles, thereby gaining the entitlements associated with those roles, including administrative privileges. The vulnerability affects Apache Syncope versions 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.6, and 4.1.0-M0 through 4.1.1. The issue is fixed in versions 4.0.7 and 4.1.2.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated attacker to escalate privileges by granting themselves roles that confer administrative entitlements. This results in full compromise of the affected Apache Syncope deployment, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts rated as high.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade affected Apache Syncope instances to version 4.0.7 or 4.1.2, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations or workarounds are specified. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory recommending these versions.
