AI-suggested

Upgrade Kafka Streams to versions 4.2.2, 4.3.2, or 4.4.0 where the next punctuation time calculation includes overflow-checked arithmetic and rescheduling only occurs when time moves forward. Additionally, maintain the log.message.timestamp.after.max.ms setting bounded on source topics to reject excessively large timestamps and restrict write access to these topics to trusted users.

Description

Kafka Streams has a vulnerability where its stream-time clock calculation can overflow when processing records with timestamps near Long.MAX_VALUE. This causes the StreamThread to stall indefinitely, making the Streams application unresponsive. The issue affects only the Streams application, not the Kafka brokers or cluster. It requires write access to a source topic using stream-time punctuation and is mitigated in Kafka Streams versions 4.2.2, 4.3.2, and 4.4.0.
