Linux hwe edge: In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: iwlwifi: mld: stop TX during firmware restart When iwlwifi firmware… (CVE-2026-64175)
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's iwlwifi driver for Intel Wi-Fi firmware was resolved. The flaw involved the transmission (TX) path continuing to dequeue and attempt to send frames during a firmware restart, despite the firmware being non-responsive. This caused a tight loop of failed transmissions and memory allocation churn, leading to high CPU usage and memory pressure. The issue was fixed by adding a check to stop all TX operations during firmware restart. The vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 7.0.0-28.28 and specific other versions. A patch is available and should be applied to mitigate the issue.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in the Linux kernel's iwlwifi driver (CVE-2026-64175) occurs when the Intel Wi-Fi firmware crashes and enters a hardware restart state. The function iwl_mld_tx_from_txq() did not check the firmware restart flag before dequeuing frames, causing iwl_trans_tx() to fail repeatedly and free frames in a tight loop. This results in excessive CPU consumption and memory pressure due to rapid skb allocation and slab fragmentation under high-throughput conditions. The RX path and TXQ allocation worker already had protections against this, but the TX dequeue function lacked this guard. The fix adds the missing check to halt TX during firmware restart, preventing the resource exhaustion scenario. Multiple Linux kernel versions are affected, and patches have been released as part of standard kernel updates.
Potential Impact
The vulnerability causes a denial-of-service condition on affected systems by wasting CPU cycles and causing memory pressure due to slab fragmentation. This can degrade system performance significantly under high network throughput, such as during heavy UDP traffic or active SSH sessions. There is no direct confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The CVSS score is 7.5 (medium severity) with no impact on confidentiality or integrity but high impact on availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
A patch is available and should be applied by updating the Linux kernel to the fixed versions as provided by the vendor. The Ubuntu security advisories USN-8593-1 and USN-8603-1 provide updated kernel packages that include the fix. After updating, a system reboot is required to apply the changes. Due to ABI changes, third-party kernel modules may need recompilation and reinstallation. Follow the vendor's update instructions carefully to ensure full remediation.
